How to Rate Down Fill for Jackets
Down is the soft, hair-like strands under the outer feathers of a bird. Down is very soft and light and is an excellent insulation. There is also a product called synthetic down, which mimics the natural stuff. Both kinds of down can be assigned "fill power ratings." The more space one ounce of uncompressed down fills, the higher its rating and, theoretically, the better it will insulate. One ounce of uncompressed down that occupies 600 cubic inches is rated 600. Although American law regulates the truthfulness of the claim that a jacket(Visit our website) is filled with "down," fill power ratings claims are not regulated by law. Instructions 1. Send samples of your jackets to the International Down and Feather Laboratory (IDFL) at 1455 South 1100 East, Salt Lake City, UT 84105 for testing. 2. Request certification of fill power ratings for jackets manufactured in China from the IDFL office in China at Tonghui Mid-Road 118, Xiaoshan, Hangzhou, Zhejiang 311208. Seventy-five percent of the world's down comes from China. 3. Sell down jackets rated as 530--640 in mid-markets. Market down jackets rated 640--745 as "performance" products. Jackets(belstaff store) with down fill rated 745--850 are usually advertised as excellent or "high-performance."
